Cathedral JV Soccer defeats Oaks Christian 2-0.

Posted By: Coach Victor on 12/8/2009

Cathedral's JV Soccer team picked up right where they left off last season. The Phantoms are once again off to a fast start, winning their first three games. The JV Soccer Team managed to get two victories last week against St. Paul and Notre Dame S.O. by the slightest of margins, 1-0. Oaks Christian made the drive down the 101fwy today in hopes of giving the Phantoms their first loss of the season.

Going into the game the Phantoms knew it was going to be a battle. As expected Oaks Christian was physical, organized in the back and quick up front. During the first half both teams struggled to maintain possesion due to agressive play of both teams. Even though most of the half took place at midfield, the Phantoms were able to create a few opportunites that sailed just wide or over the crossbar. The first 35 minutes ended 0-0.

In the second half the Phantoms began to take control of the game little by little. It wasn't until the 50th minute when Victor R. won the ball at midfield leading a quick counter, swinging the ball wide to Billie(Fr.) who then gave a through ball to substitute Chris A.(Fr.), who shooked the defender and scored the go-ahead goal for Cathedral. It seemed like the Phantoms had control of the game, but that was not the case. Oaks Christian answered back by putting pressure on top and producing some good chances for goal. For much of the game Sophmore Goalkeeper Bryan was not tested but came up big with four good saves in the last minutes. Moments after Alexis(So.) was able to win a 50/50 ball at midfield and connected with Justin(Fr.), who had the coolness to put the ball in the back of the net with five minutes left in the game. The final score ended 2-0 in favor of the home team. The JV is now 3-0.

    • Overall good team play and great passing by the boys. MVP for the game definitely goes to the Keeper, Brian. He stayed strong on two break-aways and stopped both shots keeping us in the lead.
