Cathedral High School 3 -3 Oaks Christian

Posted By: Administrator on 12/10/2009

After a quick and aggressive start from the Phantoms, with two goals in the first twenty minutes of the game, they soon gave way to an even more aggressive and well fit Oaks Christian team. Cathedral goals were scored by freshman Kevin D. and Daniel Garcia, both were assisted by junior Luis Portillo. Soon after Oaks Christian began to aggressively pressure Cathedral high on the Phantoms defensive end. The high pressure and the consistency of winning 50/50 balls paid off. The Lions scored on a quick transition beating Cathedral's outside-left midfielder and defender, Chris Aguinaga and Jose Aldana.

The half ended with Cathedral leading 2-1.

In the second half Cathedral began to battle for possession of the ball and challenged the Lions for domination of the ball. Phantoms began winning 50/50 balls; Edwin Sanchez and Edwin Corona started creating scoring chances, and taking several shots at the Lion's den. Phantoms continued to pressure and had several opportunities. After eluding two defenders, Luis Portillo's shot hit the goal post and Daniel Garcia was there to finish the play. In the 68th minute the Phantoms scored the third goal in what
appeared to seal the win.   However, the Lions would not give up and kept their composure. It seemed like the Phantoms would score again, but the Lions got a break and scored off a direct kick with six minutes left. With only one minute left in regulation the ref made a controversial call awarding the Lions a PK. The Lions scored and tied the game. Final score 3-3.
